  • Missing shingles
  • Water stains inside of the home
  • Exposed roof components that look out of place

However, there are also times where you might not see apparent roof issues such as rotting plywood, pipe collar cracks, or leaks. In this case, you have options, which leads to our next question.

I have a roof leak, what do I do?

Perhaps you do your springtime maintenance and notice a few missing shingles or one morning you wake up and the bathroom ceiling has a leak stain.

In the case of a roofing leak, you have options. Sometimes people ask if they need a new roof because of a leak, and the answer is always it depends.

Factors such as the age of your current roof, the current warranty (if there is one), and the scope of your roof leak will ultimately determine the next steps. In either case, the first step is to always get the issue inspected by a roofing company… an honest roofing company.

Depending on the damage on your roof causing the leak – a few missing shingles or a serious problem – will then determine your appropriate actions:

  • Sometimes a simple roof repair is an answer
  • Calling insurance to see if your roof qualifies for a replacement
  • A new roof

How much does a new roof cost?

The answer varies depending on the size and complexity of your roof as well as the choice of materials.

The height of a home will also affect the overall cost. This is a simple factor of time and labor: a single-story home requires less harnessing, fewer ladders, and less time climbing up and down ladders with heavy supplies.

Skylights, plumbing vent stacks, HVAC openings, etc. can also add to the new roof cost.

Your best bet is to call us and speak with one of our roofing experts to learn more about your options. You can also request a free roofing inspection online.

When should shingles be replaced?

In many cases, homeowners can plan to replace their roof around the expected end of its lifespan, but it’s important to recognize the signs that shingles need to be replaced earlier. Check your roof for the following signs of roof shingle damage:

  • Falling roof shingles (you should be able to see where they’re missing)
  • Shingle cracks
  • Shingle granules in your gutters
  • Buckling or curling shingles
  • Water leaks in the attic

It’s important to call a professional immediately if you see any of these signs, as deteriorating shingles leave your home susceptible to further roof damage.

What products are eligible for tax credit?

Solar PV systems installed in 2020 and 2021 are eligible for a 26% tax credit. In August 2022, Congress passed an extension of the ITC (Investment Tax Credit), raising it to 30% for the installation of which was between 2022-2032. (Systems installed on or before December 31, 2019 were also eligible for a 30% tax credit.) It will decrease to 26% for systems installed in 2033 and to 22% for systems installed in 2034. I heard skylights leak, is that true?

When skylights first came out, they were prone to leaks which gave them a bad name. Nowadays, with the advancement of technology, skylights are manufactured with a three-layer water protection that prevents any leaks.

Most manufacturers of skylights carry an installation warranty. Our roofing experts can provide you more customized specs once we find the solution right for you.

What direction should my skylight face to get the best light?

Unless you’re building a new house, you can’t choose which direction the skylight will face. This is because a skylight’s orientation is determined by the direction of the roof.

Typically, west-facing skylights bring in the afternoon sun, south-facing skylights bring in a lot of bright light throughout the day and north-facing skylights provide constant, diffused light.

To find the best spot for a skylight, consider how you use the room and how the addition of a skylight will affect the space.

F A Q

What is the best gutter material to use?

For most homeowners, it’s aluminum. Specifically, seamless aluminum gutters made on-site. Aluminum gutters come in many colors and last for decades without rusting. They provide one of the lowest annual costs of any gutter material. Other options include copper, which lasts the longest of common gutter materials but is among the most expensive, and galvanized steel, which will hold up in almost any weather but requires more maintenance and comes in fewer color options.

How does Summit Roofing determine how to install my gutters?

In addition to downspouts, there are two other essential elements for a successful gutter installation: slope and support. Slope aids in sending the water to the downspout and general guidelines state that you need about one half-inch of slope for every 10 feet of gutter. As for gutter hangers, or the support for your gutters, the type of gutter and where you live will determine how far apart the gutter hangers are spaced. In regions with snow and ice, they need to be about 18 inches apart and in areas with little to no snow, they can be as far as 36 inches apart.

How many downspouts do I really need?

It is most common to add a downspout about every 20 or 30 feet of gutter, although depending on the slope of your roof and the rooflines, you may need more. In areas with heavy rainfall, we may also determine that for optimal flow, you want downspouts on each end of a gutter run – even if it’s only about 20 feet.
